What it measures

Measures the full continuum of self-determination theory (SDT) motivation for exercise from amotivation through external, introjected, identified, and integrated regulation to intrinsic motivation. The most comprehensive SDT exercise motivation measure. Predicts exercise adherence, wellbeing, and health outcomes.

Freely available from Philip Wilson. Six subscale scores; no total recommended — use Relative Autonomy Index (RAI) as a composite autonomous motivation score. BREQ-2 (19 items) lacks Integrated Regulation. Widely used in exercise psychology, health behaviour change, and SDT research.
