Emphasis on Brand Intent

Belief That a Brand's Intentions Should Determine Cultural Appropriation Judgments
3 items 2024 α 0.90 (Study 1, n = 200); 0.93 (Study 2, n = 402) Free Lin, J. D., Kim, N. Y. J., Uduehi, E., & Keinan, A.

What it measures

This three-item scale measures how strongly a person believes that whether a brand's intentions, such as whether they were positive, should decide whether its use of cultural elements counts as cultural appropriation. Lin, Kim, Uduehi, and Keinan (2024) used it in Studies 1 and 2, with equal numbers of liberal and conservative Prolific participants, to examine the criteria people use when judging cultural appropriation. The items were written by the authors.

Response format

Usage notes & scoring

Alphas were .90 (Study 1) and .93 (Study 2) (Lin et al. 2024). Validity was not discussed separately. Each item completes the statement: 'The brand's intentions (whether the intentions were positive) [response] determine whether their actions are considered cultural appropriation.' The authors measured this alongside its counterpart as a repeated measure; liberals placed more weight on historical power imbalance than on brand intent, whereas conservatives showed the reverse pattern. See also Emphasis on Historical Power Imbalance (ID 90554) and Perceived Cultural Appropriation (ID 90553), from the same article.
