Anger Emotional State (DES II)

What it measures

Five items assess anger-related emotional experience. Directions and response format can be adapted to measure either current emotional state or frequency of experience. Part of the Differential Emotions Scale (DES II).

Response format

5-point (1=not at all, 5=extremely)

Scale items

• enraged
• angry
• feel like screaming at somebody or banging on something
• feel angry, irritated, annoyed
• feel so mad you're about to blow up

Usage notes & scoring

Developed by Izard (1977) as part of the Differential Emotions Scale II. Description states three items; five were extracted from the source—verify item count against the original article. Alphas of .89, .921, and .92 reported across multiple consumer behaviour applications. Can be used as a state or trait measure depending on instructions.
