Self-Regulatory Orientation (Locomotion)

Belief That an Entity Encouraged One to Take Action and Get Things Done
3 items 2023 α 0.96 (Study 2, n = 403); 0.93 (Study 3, n = 402) Free Septianto, F., Mathmann, F., Hollebeek, L. D., & Higgins, E. T.

What it measures

This three-item scale measures how much a person believes an entity, such as a company, organization, religion, or another person, encouraged them to take action and get things done. Septianto et al. (2023) used it with U.S. Prolific participants in Studies 2 and 3 of research on how social media advertising can foster female consumers' empowerment and engagement through regulatory mode. The authors drew inspiration from Kruglanski et al.'s (2000) work on locomotion and assessment.

Response format

Likely 7-point scale (format not reported; not at all / very much was used for another scale in the studies)

Usage notes & scoring

Alphas were .96 (Study 2) and .93 (Study 3) (Septianto et al. 2023, pp. 697, 698). Validity was not discussed directly; the scale served as a successful manipulation check in both studies, giving some preliminary evidence of predictive validity. The article did not give an explicit stem; one consistent with the authors' description (p. 697) is 'Indicate the extent to which ___ encouraged you to...', with the blank naming the entity doing the encouraging. The response format was not reported. See also Self-Regulatory Orientation (Assessment) (ID 90535), Regulatory Mode Scale (ID 406), and Empowerment (Customer with the Company) (ID 90373), from the same article.
