School Engagement Measure

What it measures

Measures three dimensions of student school engagement: cognitive (investment in learning, use of learning strategies, self-regulation), behavioural (participation, following rules, attending class), and emotional (sense of belonging, interest in school, relationships with teachers and peers). Fredricks et al.'s tripartite model is the dominant conceptual framework for student engagement research.

Usage notes & scoring

Three subscale scores. Primarily validated for secondary school students (K-12) — the UWES-S is preferred for higher education. Emotional engagement (particularly belonging) is the strongest predictor of dropout prevention. Widely used in school-based intervention research and educational policy evaluation.
