The definitive implementation of the 2x2 achievement goal framework, validated across multiple samples (n=180–474) with convergent validity against need for achievement, fear of failure, self-efficacy, and performance outcomes. Subscale alphas: MAP 0.75–0.82, MAV 0.71–0.74, PAP 0.79–0.87, PAV 0.80–0.86. The four-factor structure is supported by CFA. Mastery-approach goals predict intrinsic motivation, deep processing, persistence after failure, and positive affect during learning. Performance-approach goals predict effort and performance in competitive contexts but are also associated with surface processing and vulnerability to failure feedback. Performance-avoidance goals predict surface processing, test anxiety, choking under pressure, and poorer long-term retention. Mastery-avoidance goals — the most recently theorised factor — capture fear of losing one's competence or standards and are associated with perfectionism and ruminative self-monitoring. In consumer research: mastery-approach orientation predicts openness to new product learning, positive responses to educational advertising, and engagement with product expertise development; performance-approach orientation predicts luxury consumption for status signalling and sensitivity to social comparison appeals; performance-avoidance orientation predicts brand-name reliance to avoid social failure, sensitivity to brand image cues, and avoidance of novel products with uncertain quality signals. Extends and partially overlaps with VandeWalle's (1997) Goal Orientation Scale (id:495), which uses a three-factor structure (Learning, Prove, Avoid) developed in a work context.
