Liberation (Psychological)

Momentary Release From the Psychological Constraints of Adult Life
4 items 2022 α 0.93 (Study 2) Free Oh, T. T., & Pham, M. T.

What it measures

This scale measures the extent to which a person feels a temporary release from the worries, obligations and restrictions that typically come with adult life. Oh and Pham (2022) developed it from depth interviews about fun experiences and used it in Study 2, in which 188 U.S. Qualtrics panel members rated a recent fun experience. It is a core component of their liberating-engagement account of consumer fun.

Response format

5-point scale (extent to which each statement captures the experience)

Usage notes & scoring

Alpha was .93 (Oh and Pham 2022, p. 70). Validity was not discussed directly, but an EFA with items from other measures in the model was used to purify the scales, and an SEM of the final model fitted the data well (Oh 2021, supplementary SEM output). A shorter three-item version with slightly different wording was used in Study 3 (Oh and Pham 2022, pp. 60, 70). Instructions ask respondents to think about the overall setting of the experience just described and rate how well each statement captures the situation and how they personally felt.
