Social Connectedness of the Experience

Feeling That a Particular Experience Was Shared with Others
4 items 2022 α 0.92 (Study 2, 4-item version, n = 188); 0.93 (Study 3, 3-item version, n = 296) Free Oh, T. T., & Pham, M. T.

What it measures

This scale measures how much a particular experience felt like one shared with other people, with four-item and three-item versions. Oh and Pham (2022) used it in research on consumer fun: in Study 2, 188 U.S. Qualtrics panel members rated how fun a recent experience was, and in Study 3, 296 UK Prolific participants described either a recent fun or a recent happy experience. Ideas for the items came from depth interviews about fun experiences in the authors' Study 1.

Response format

Study 2: 5-point (not at all, somewhat less, neutral, somewhat more, very much so); Study 3: 7-point (1 = not at all, 7 = very much so)

Usage notes & scoring

Alphas were .92 (Study 2) and .93 (Study 3) (Oh and Pham 2022, p. 70). Validity was not discussed directly; an EFA of these and other model items was used to purify the scales, and SEM with the final scales showed good fit in both studies (based on the first author's posted results). Directions: 'Please take the time to think about the overall setting of the experience that you just described. To what extent do the following statements capture the overall situation and how you personally felt about it?' All four items were used in Study 2; item 3 was dropped in Study 3 without explanation.
