Acculturation

What it measures

A three-item likert scale designed to measure the degree to which a person from one culture feels part of another culture.

Response format

5-point Likert (1=strongly disagree, 5=strongly agree)

Scale items

• I consider myself to be [culture name].
• I would like to be known as "[culture name]."
• I feel very attached to all aspects of the [subculture]-[host culture] culture.

Usage notes & scoring

Internal consistency (alpha = .89) was reported in the primary study. Formal validity assessment was not reported by the original authors. FILL-IN-THE-BLANK FORMAT: Items 1 and 2 require insertion of the host culture label; item 3 requires both the heritage subculture and host culture labels. Researchers must adapt wording to their study context before administering. SECONDARY APPLICATIONS: Laroche, Yang, Kim & Richard (2007) used these same items with Hong Kong immigrants to Canada, reporting α = .89. Josiassen (2011) applied the scale with second-generation Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands (α = .918), administering it in Dutch via forward-backward translation. NOTE: item count corrected from 4 to 3 — the administration instruction regarding blank-filling had previously been miscounted as a scale item.
