Attitude Toward the Product/Brand (Hedonic)

What it measures

A five-item semantic differential scale measuring the hedonic component of consumer attitude toward a product or brand — the experiential, pleasure-oriented dimension arising from anticipated or actual sensory and emotional gratification. Items assess whether a product or brand is experienced as fun, exciting, delightful, thrilling, and enjoyable. The scale was developed to provide a psychometrically sound separation of the hedonic and utilitarian bases of attitude, enabling researchers to examine each dimension independently or together.

Response format

Usage notes & scoring

Multiple reliability estimates across several studies: α = .95 (brand names and generic products, Studies 1 and 2 — Voss, Spangenberg & Grohmann 2003). Internal consistencies somewhat lower in studies using product categories or specific stimulus types. VALIDITY: LISREL-based CFA confirmed a two-factor model separating hedonic and utilitarian attitude dimensions with evidence of discriminant and convergent validity across multiple studies. NOTE: This scale must be used alongside the companion Utilitarian Attitude scale (ATPU) to preserve the theoretical two-factor structure. Using the hedonic scale in isolation is appropriate when the hedonic dimension is the sole focus, but the two scales were co-validated and perform best as a pair.
