Three items measure the degree of attachment and belonging a person feels toward a particular online community. Hanson, Jiang, and Dahl (2019) created items 1 and 2; item 3 was borrowed from Cornwell et al. (2009). EFA confirmed discriminant validity with respect to community participation intentions and role clarity measures. A two-item version (items 1 and 2) was used in Study 3.
7-point (1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree; item 3 may require different anchors — see notes)
Full scale items shown. Always cite the original source when using this scale in research.
Item 3 ('How close do you feel is your relationship with this community?') is phrased as a question and may be poorly served by agree/disagree anchors; refer to the original article for guidance, and consider 'not very close / extremely close' as more appropriate alternatives. A 5-point format was used in Study 3. Companion scale measuring participation intentions is ID 945.
