Product Upgrade Likelihood

Probability of Upgrading a Product One Already Owns
4 items 2023 α 0.96 (Study 3B, n = 272) Free Garbas, J., Schubach, S., Mende, M., Scott, M. L., & Schumann, J. H.

What it measures

This four-item scale measures how likely a consumer is to upgrade a product they already own. Garbas, Schubach, Mende, Scott, and Schumann (2023) used it with smartphone owners in research on internal product upgrades, where the added capability is already built into the product. The items are phrased hypothetically but can readily be reworded to capture actual upgrade intentions. The authors named Chandran and Morwitz (2005) as the source; the two measures tap a similar idea, but the wording differs considerably.

Response format

7-point scale (items 1-3 likely strongly disagree / strongly agree; item 4 anchors not reported, possibly highly unlikely / highly likely)

Usage notes & scoring

Alpha was .96 (Study 3B, n = 272) (Garbas et al. 2023, p. 307); validity was not discussed. The blanks are filled with the focal product; Garbas et al. used a short description of the base product plus the added feature (e.g., 'my smartphone's 32 GB of memory'). Item 4 uses a different question format from items 1-3, so anchors should be chosen to suit it. Described by the authors as based on Chandran and Morwitz (2005), but the resemblance is conceptual rather than item-level. See also Product Feature Centrality and Product Feature Tangibility (this batch).
