Store Background Music Attitude

SBMAConsumer attitude toward the pleasantness and appropriateness of background music in a retail store
3 items 1992 α .91 Free Baker, J., Levy, M., & Grewal, D.

What it measures

Three items measure a shopper's attitude toward the background music played in a store, assessing whether it makes the shopping environment pleasant and whether it is considered appropriate. Despite its label emphasising background music, the scale can function more broadly as a store atmosphere attitude measure.

Response format

7-point Likert (1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree)

Usage notes & scoring

Alphas of .91 (Baker, Levy & Grewal 1992) and .90 (Baker, Grewal & Parasuraman 1994) reported across studies. Item 2 is reverse-scored. When the scale is used with actual in-store music rather than a hypothetical description, item 3 wording ('was appropriate') may need tense adjustment.
